A Light on a Hill: Finding Joy, Value, and Excellence in Your Work

Life is unpredictable and often unforgiving. Yet, through the challenges, I’ve found a source of forgiveness and renewal in Jesus—a foundation that shapes both my personal journey and my professional philosophy. As I approach my fifth anniversary living in Michigan this September, I reflect on the lessons learned in business, service, and faith, and how they come together in the work we do at A Light on a Hill Productions.
The Gift of Joy in Work
Ecclesiastes 3:12 reminds us, “There is nothing better for people than to be happy in their work.” This wisdom isn’t just ancient advice—it’s a guiding principle. True satisfaction in our daily efforts is a gift from God, a reminder to embrace each moment and find meaning even in the ordinary. When we approach our work with contentment and godliness, we experience a kind of gain that transcends material reward.
Lessons in Leadership and Service
Over the years, managing teams and serving clients has taught me several enduring truths:
Good Communication is Essential: Clear, honest communication is the backbone of any successful business. Too many voices can create confusion—focus and clarity are key.
Service Means Doing Your Best the First Time: Excellence in service isn’t about perfection, but about diligence. “Measure twice, cut once”—and always aim to deliver your best so you don’t have to redo the job.
A Smile Changes Everything: Service without a smile is service without heart. Your attitude can transform a moment, and possibly someone’s entire day.
Value People: Everyone wants to feel valued. When we lift others up, especially when they feel overlooked, we foster a culture of respect and motivation.
Volunteering Offers Perspective: Taking time to serve others helps keep our own struggles in perspective and brings genuine joy—not just to those we help, but to ourselves as well.
Building Trust and Avoiding Micromanagement
Trust is earned, but it must also be demonstrated. Micromanaging divides teams and stifles creativity. In business and in life, empowering others leads to stronger relationships and better results.
Why "A Light on a Hill"?
Our name draws inspiration from Matthew 5:16: “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” It also reflects the idea of America as a shining light on a hill—a beacon of hope and excellence. At A Light on a Hill, we believe that a job well done is its own reward, and that our work can inspire others and make a lasting impact.
